Telstra boss David Thodey wants the Senate to pass the budget as soon as possible "for the good of Australia".

Mr Thodey said delays in passing key aspects of the budget made it hard for businesses and consumers to plan for the future.

"I think the government was elected, they need to get on and do what they've got to do," he told reporters on Thursday.

"For the good of Australia, it is always good to have the budget done and people can get on and plan their lives and their business."

But he said Telstra was getting on with business, regardless of the state of affairs surrounding the budget.

"Yes we would all like greater certainty but... we are getting on with our business, with or without the government, because that's what we've got to do," he said.

The Abbott government has had trouble convincing the Senate to pass some of the more controversial points of the budget, including the $7 medicare co-payment for GP visits and an increase in fuel excise.

Mr Thodey also talked up the current state of the Australian economy, saying that while unemployment is on the rise and consumer confidence isn't great, things were going fairly well overall.

"In general, the economy, while a little bit patchy, is generally ok."
