Passenger airbag warning to Tesla drivers

Tesla has told owners of its Model X cars not to seat anyone in the front passenger seat until a software update fixes an issue with the airbag.

The passengers of almost 500 Australian Tesla owners could be at risk until they download an urgent software fix for airbags.

Tesla has warned 469 owners who bought Model X cars sold this year not to have anyone in the front passenger seat after finding the airbag doesn't deploy.

"Although we're not aware of a single customer car that has had an issue with it, there was an anomaly with the passenger airbag in a right-hand-drive Model X that was part of a routine internal test this week," it told customers in a note supplied to AAP on Thursday.

The car company says it found the issue related to the software controlling the passenger airbags in right-hand-drive Model X cars.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the car's restraint control module was unable to recognise when a passenger is in the front seat.

"The RCM doesn't receive a value that it recognises as valid so it will not deploy the passenger front airbag in the event of a crash," the ACCC says on its website.

Tesla says an over-the-air software update will be available to download this weekend and there was no need to bring cars in for service.

It recommends drivers, as a precaution, don't allow their front passenger seat to be occupied until the software update is installed.
