Pats, Browns with problems at quarterback

Coming into the third week of the NFL season both New England and Cleveland are down to their third string quarterbacks.

The New England Patriots are trying to determine how to proceed at quarterback after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a right shoulder injury.

The Patriots who are without starter Tom Brady due to his 'Deflategate' suspension are down to rookie Jacoby Brissett as the only other quarterback on the active 53-man roster with Garoppolo suffering a sprained right AC joint in Sunday's 31-24 win against the Miami Dolphins.

"I'm not sure exactly what the situation is going to be, I think a lot of that will be determined later today relative to Jimmy's whole situation and what it's going to be," offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels said.

"I'm sure if he can't play or back up, then we'll be going through that process today."

The Patriots have no plans at this time to add another quarterback before Thursday night's home game against the Houston Texans on a short week of preparation, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Although it may be a long shot, Garoppolo could still dress for the game as a No. 2 emergency option and run a limited portion of the offence if needed.

The struggling Cleveland Browns are in a similar position after Robert Griffin III fractured a bone in his left shoulder, an injury suffered in the season opener and is likely to miss three months.

Josh McCown, who started the week two loss at home to the Baltimore Ravens, is going back to the sideline with a shoulder injury.

McCown is not ready to commit to sitting, but if he cannot play, third-round pick Cody Kessler probably would be the starter for week three against Miami.
