Patton needs to lift for Giants: Cameron

GWS Giants key forward Jonathon Patton needs to regain confidence in his goalkicking after a tenative return to the AFL last weekend.

Injury-prone GWS forward Jonathon Patton needs to work hard on his kicking if he's to have the confidence to convert his chances in front of goal against Sydney this weekend, according to his coach Leon Cameron.

Former No.1 draft pick Patton played just 32 games in the Giants' first four seasons due to three knee reconstructions.

Promoted to the senior side for last week's clash with Geelong after some games for the reserves, the 22-year-old spearhead nabbed six marks but struggled with his kicking.

He missed some relatively straightforward shots and went goalless, logging just three behinds.

"Bit by bit he's getting there, we were really pleased with his effort," Cameron said on Tuesday.

"In the air, he getting a bit better, he's getting more confident.

"Obviously he didn't hit the scoreboard which we wanted him to do.

"He had four or five shots and that confidence in front of goals he's got to resurrect over the next few weeks."

Patton won't find things any easier in Saturday's Sydney derby at the SCG, where he will probably be opposed by one of two veterans in Ted Richards or Heath Grundy.

"He had three of four weeks in the NEAFL to gain a little bit of that confidence, but confidence comes in all different shapes and sizes and ways," Cameron said.

"This weekend you've got to work really hard to get confidence against a good side like the Swans."
