Patty Mills has made the most of his starting opportunity, scoring 18 points in San Antonio's 98-79 win over New Orleans.

The Australian was called up for the Spurs after point guard Tony Parker was rested from the home opener against the Pelicans on Saturday (Sunday AEDT).

Parker along with Manu Ginobili sat out the match due to coach Gregg Popovich's concerns over the congested early schedule.

Kawhi Leonard led the way for the Spurs with 20 points.

The Spurs won their first season opener in 20 years without Tim Duncan, who retired in the off-season.

San Antonio didn't appear to miss their veterans Parker and Ginobili as 11 players scored to help the team remain unbeaten after three games.

Pelicans forward Anthony Davis was held to 18 points after scoring 50 and 45 points in the first two games.
