Canterbury coach Dean Pay has blasted his side following their insipid 32-10 NRL loss to the Gold Coast.
A blunt Pay was straight to the point in the wake of their six-tries-to-two defeat which saw them sink to 15th on the ladder.
"We were never in the contest mate. Never in it," he said.
The Dogs have now lost four in a row and seven of their past eight.
With just three wins under their belt, it represents the club's worst result through 14 games since 1964.
Pay conceded the club's salary cap problems, which have forced Bulldogs management to attempt to offload players, had finally taken a toll.
The match was Moses Mbye's final game for the side ahead of a mid-season move to the Wests Tigers, while Aaron Woods has been linked to Cronulla despite being less than a year into a four-season deal.
"It's got to have some effect on them," Pay said.
"But we're professionals and we've got to be better than what we were today and we weren't."
Pay said he sensed the massive loss coming after watching his side struggle for energy and enthusiasm during Friday's captain's run.
He went as far as to say he felt sorry for the 6874 fans who showed up to Belmore Sportsground on Saturday.
"Physically we just weren't good enough," Pay said.
"The way they turned up, the way they trained during the week wasn't good enough.
"I thought one of these was coming for a while and we've been competitive when we play our best.
"But what we dished up there today just wasn't good enough. I feel sorry for our fans, our supporters who sit there and watch it."
