Pearson cruises into semis

Australia's Sally Pearson (R) has cruised into the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles in Moscow.

Australian Sally Pearson has begun the defence of her 100m hurdles title at the world athletics championships in commanding style, clocking her fastest time of the year in the opening round.

On a bright, sunny morning in Moscow, Pearson cruised to the line in first place in the second heat in 12.62 seconds - three hundredths of a second faster than she ran at last month's London Diamond League meet.

The Australian is the reigning world and Olympic champion, having dominated the event for the last two years.

The semis and final are scheduled for Saturday evening (local time).
