Todd Carney's injury-hit first season in Super League has gone from bad to worse, with the gifted playmaker ruled out for up to two months with a torn pectoral muscle, while teammate Willie Tonga faces a similar stint on the sidelines.
The Catalans Dragons' Australian five-eighth was taken from the field during Sunday's 22-22 draw with Huddersfield at the Magic Weekend clutching his shoulder and scans have confirmed his worst fears.
"Todd Carney has suffered a torn pectoral muscle and will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks," said a Dragons spokesman.
Carney, who turns 29 on Tuesday, was the most high-profile addition to Super League this year but missed the start of the season with a calf injury sustained in training.
The former Canberra, Sydney Roosters and Cronulla player made his debut against Warrington in round three but missed another eight matches with rib and leg injuries.
Sunday's game was his seventh out of a possible 16 for the Catalans in Super League and only his second on English soil.
Tonga is also facing a lay off of six-to-eight weeks after scans confirmed he sustained a broken jaw against Huddersfield and he will undergo surgery on Tuesday morning.
Tonga, a former Australian Test centre who is also in his first season in Super League, was concussed 12 seconds into his debut at St Helens in February and missed the win over Hull KR in April with an eye infection.
