A road south of Byron Bay on the NSW north coast will be closed for most of the day after a fatal accident.

A pedestrian has been hit by a car and killed near Byron Bay on the NSW north coast.

Police say a Holden sedan hit the 25-year-old man at Broken Head about 3.30am on Sunday.

The driver, who was uninjured, has been taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

The Coast Road is expected to be closed in both directions for several hours.
