A team from the UK's Royal Veterinary College and the University of Texas have been studying the birds at London Zoo, the BBC reports.
They believe a running track could help them solve the mystery of the way the birds move.
Beneath the track lie sensors, which allow the researchers to analyse how these birds get around.
Experts have already discovered that waddling is the most energy efficient way for penguins to move on land.
The scientists are now trying to work out how the penguins waddle.
"Penguins move in a really weird way," Prof Hutchinson from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) tells BBC.
"They have a very upright posture like a human, but they also have very short, crouched legs - it is very comical."
