Penguins are cute, cuddly and apparently enjoy necrophilia, homosexuality and chick abuse.

The sex behaviours of the Adelie penguins were documented by a British surgeon on Scott's 1910 Antarctic expedition.

But the findings were thought to be so shocking and depraved that they were hidden for a hundred years.

So graphic that the most disturbing parts were even written in Greek.

That was not until Natural History Museum curator, Douglas Russell, found the secret file.

“I just found this usual pamphlet that said not for publications in bold type at the top of it,” Mr Russell said.

With such a high mortality rate in the colony, some male penguins were known to mistake a dead female for live ones displaying the presenting posture they adopt in mating rituals.

The full results are to be released to the scientific community and the public at large.
