Penrith have been dealt a bitter blow with fullback Matt Moylan to undergo surgery on his injured ankle, potentially sidelining him for several months.
Moylan will go under the knife later this week after scans revealed the injury was worse than initially thought.
"Not the best news surgery later this week, but hoping for a quick recovery! Can't wait to get back out on the field!" Moylan said on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.
It was not initially clear how long he would be out for, but the initial prognosis over the weekend was for a minimum of six weeks and there were fears he could be sidelined for up to 10.
Moylan's setback compounds the NRL club's injury woes, which have plagued it for most of the season.
The star fullback was injured in the 11th minute of his side's 26-20 loss to Parramatta on Friday night.
It was initially thought he had strained the ligaments in his ankle, however a follow up revealed he had torn the ligaments and on Tuesday it was decided surgery was needed.
Moylan has been one of his side's best this year and spent time in NSW camp ahead of State of Origin I as back up for Blues No.1 Josh Dugan.
