Penrith have been dealt a pre-season blow with backrower Sika Manu ruled out for six months after having surgery on his left shoulder.

The former Melbourne NRL enforcer had the operation immediately after returning from the World Cup in the UK, where he played three matches for Tonga.

It's a huge blow for both the Panthers and Manu, who missed a handful of games last season with a thumb injury.

The 26-year-old is believed to have been carrying a shoulder problem for most of the year.

Meanwhile, Panthers hooker James Segeyaro is recovering well from a pectoral injury suffered in Papua New Guinea's clash with the Prime Minister's XIII in October.

The 23-year-old missed the World Cup with the injury, but is due to begin contact sessions in the new year.
