A person has been taken into custody following a police search on the Cerberus naval base in the suburb of Hastings on the Mornington Peninsula.

The person taken into custody resides on the base.

A police spokesperson told SBS a "number of items" had been located in a residential unit following a search earlier today.

Victorian police said a 400 metre exclusion zone was set up as a precaution.

Members from the Bomb Response Unit and Arson and Explosive Square are on their way.

It's unknown if the person in custody was a serving member of the Royal Australian Navy.

MORE TO COME.
