Perth Airport bushfire 'suspicious'

A bushfire burning near Perth Airport is being treated as suspicious, as fire crews work to strengthen containment lines.

A bushfire that threatened lives and property near Perth Airport has been contained and is under control, as authorities investigate the cause of the suspicious blaze.

An advice alert has been issued for Perth Airport, the eastern part of Kewdale in the City of Belmont and the northeastern part of Welshpool in the City of Canning.

The fire is burning in bushland between Abernethy Road and the Tonkin Highway.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said there was no longer any threat to lives or homes but there is a lot of smoke in the area.

Firefighters are strengthening containment lines and mopping up.

WA Police and Australian Federal Police are also on the scene.

The fire was reported at 12.50am (WST).

Police are asking the public to report any suspicious behaviour to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
