A Lithuanian man has been caught allegedly smuggling more than two kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in handbags at Perth Airport.

Custom officials stopped the man, who arrived on a flight from Singapore on Saturday, and discovered an unusually heavy clutch handbag in his possession.

Further examination of the bag found it concealed a crystalline substance wrapped in plastic that initially tested positive for methamphetamine.

Another five clutch handbags were found in the man's luggage.

The man, 34, was referred to the Australian Federal Police for further investigation.

Offenders caught smuggling illegal drugs such as methamphetamine can face a maximum penalty of a $1.275 million fine or life imprisonment.
