A surge in hotel developments has been tipped for Perth and Fremantle, with more than 4000 new hotel rooms worth more than $3 billion to be built over the next five years.
The state government has previously said 1900 new hotel rooms were needed by 2020 to keep pace with corporate and leisure demand, but the Australian Hotels Association believes that number will be well exceeded.
Chief executive Bradley Woods said the state government and Tourism WA had done much to stimulate new hotel development interest while local councils had improved approvals processes.
"Consideration is also underway for new hotels in outer metropolitan areas such as Murdoch University and Perth Airport," Mr Woods said.
In 2012, Premier Colin Barnett described a chronic shortage of hotel rooms in Perth as "the greatest constraint on tourism development".
