Perth man dies after hug triggers assault

WA Police have charged a 26-year-old man with grievous bodily harm after he allegedly assaulted a man who hugged him outside a nightclub.

A 32-year-old Perth man who was assaulted while drunkenly hugging nightclub patrons has died from his injuiries.

Police said Zak Alan Harvey was outside the Capitol nightclub on Murray Street at about 5am (WST) on Sunday in a highly intoxicated state when he began hugging people.

He grabbed a 26-year-old man around the shoulder and neck area, and was pushed away, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head.

Mr Harvey was taken to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition.

Police said on Wednesday that he had died.

The man who pushed him has been charged with grievous bodily harm and is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on May 7.

"A post mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death and a determination on charges will be made," police said.
