Perth Super 6 golf to be a pressure cooker

British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen predicts the revolutionary World Super 6 golf tournament in Perth will provide a pressure-cooker environment that will get the adrenaline pumping.

The inaugural tournament will feature three days of traditional stroke play, before switching to a match-play format in the final round as the top-24 golfers battle it out in a series of six-hole, knockout duels.

And in an added quirk, any match-play round that is tied after the six holes will be decided by a sudden-death battle on a 90m, purpose-built hole.

The tournament is tri-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia, ensuring it will attract plenty of curious onlookers from around the world.

Oosthuizen, the world No.25, said having the right mindset entering the match play would be crucial in the race for victory.

"You can have a five-shot lead after round three and lose your first round in match play, and off home you go," Oosthuizen said.

"I think the match play is going to bring everyone closer.

"You won't feel any more adrenaline in golf than playing the last three or four holes in a major tournament and having a chance to win the event.

"And I think in a match play, it's the closest that it gets you to that, because it's ripe for a win, even if it's just for the win to go to the next round."

Oosthuizen is a big fan of the new tournament, saying the six-hole match-play battles will encourage riskier shots as golfers attempt to gain an edge.

And he said the cut-throat nature of match play would add more pressure on the players who did well over the opening three rounds.

Although the World Super 6 tournament is in its first year, Oosthuizen feels like a defending champion of sorts after winning the 2016 Perth International, also played at Lake Karrinyup.

Oosthuizen and world No.11 Alex Noren are the early favourites to win the Super 6 in Perth.

Other drawcards include 2014 Perth International champion Thorbjorn Olesen, US Amateur Championship winner Curtis Luck and American Peter Uihlein.
