Perth to host Davis Cup playoff

Australia will play their Davis Cup playoff tie against Uzbekistan on grass in Perth in September.

Australia will defend their hard-earned place in the elite Davis Cup World Group on a grass court in Perth in September.

Captain Pat Rafter's team must win the playoff with Uzbekistan at Cottlesloe Tennis Club from September 12-14 to stay in among the top 16 nations after falling to a first-round defeat by France on return to the World Group in February.

Rafter welcomed the home advantage and venue announced on Monday against an Uzbekistan team likely to be headed by world No.49 Denis Istomin.

"Home ties are special in this competition and it's terrific to play at different places around Australia," said Rafter.

"I know there are lots of keen tennis fans in WA and no doubt they'll want to come out and support the boys.

"We'll do everything we can to get over the line to stay in the World Group."

This will be the third time Australia have played Uzbekistan and the Australians hold a 2-0 advantage.

The most recent meeting produced a memorable win in April last year in the remote town of Namangan in Uzbekistan, where Bernard Tomic won both singles matches and Lleyton Hewitt teamed with WA's Matt Ebden to win the doubles.

It will be the first time Davis Cup has been played in Perth since 2004 when Lleyton Hewitt, Wayne Arthurs and Todd Woodbridge defeated Morocco 4-1 at Royal King's Park.
