In a rare moment of cross-party cooperation, the Senate has unanimously passed a motion in support of Australian journalist Peter Greste.

The Australian parliament is continuing its push for the Egyptian legal system to drop terrorism-related charges against journalist Peter Greste.

A cross-party motion has been unanimously passed by the Senate acknowledging what it says is a lack of evidence against Mr Greste.

The motion was brought by senators Christine Milne, Nick Xenophon, Chris Back and Penny Wong.

Mr Greste was deported from Egypt under presidential decree but is still subject to ongoing proceedings in Egypt.

There's still a real chance the Al Jazeera journalist could be found guilty in absentia and face travel restrictions the rest of his life.

He spoke with Darren Mara about the fresh parliamentary support in his case.
