Petition calls for murder victim memorial

A man who lives near where the body of a Korean woman was found in Brisbane is petitioning the government and council to establish a permanent memorial.

A Brisbane man who lives 500 metres from where a Korean student's battered and lifeless body was found is petitioning for a permanent memorial honouring the slain woman.

Phillip Hay says the murder of Eunji Ban, 22, is so shocking and unsettling that the city needs a physical reminder of her senseless death.

The 36-year-old marketer says he feels compelled to do something to help honour the young South Korean who was killed walking the same path he often did.

"I'm not sure whether it's because it happened so close to home or just the brutality of it," he told AAP.

"The route Eunji Ban took is one I take all of the time."

Mr Hay was born and bred in Brisbane and says the city lost some of its innocence when Ms Ban's body was found at Wickham Park.

She had only been in Australia for six weeks when she was killed while walking to her cleaning job early in the morning on November 24.

Last Wednesday, more than 1000 people gathered at the crime scene to pay their respects.

Mr Hay, who attended the service, isn't sure what form a permanent memorial should take but wants the Korean community to be consulted.

"It could be a plaque or statue or the renaming of a street," he said.

"It could be an art installation with an anti-violence message."

So far, the petition to the state government and Brisbane City Council has attracted almost 500 signatures.

AAP has sought comment from both.

A 19-year-old man, Alex Reuben McEwan, fronted court last Tuesday charged with Ms Ban's murder.
