Simona Halep and Andrea Petkovic have booked their first career grand slam semi-finals with identical 6-2 6-2 wins to advance at the French Open.

Play was delayed for three hours by rain before the pair of quarter-finals got under way.

The sun came out briefly in the early evening as dry weather prevailed.

Petkovic crushed Italian 10th seed Sara Errani with the loss of just four games, while fourth seed Halep beat 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Germany's Petkovic needed a mere 63 minutes to advance to the best showing of a career blighted by several seasons of back and knee injuries.

So weak was the Errani serve that her opponent took them standing inside the baseline.

"I have to say today I was in a real zone, I didn't think at all," said the winner.

"I was just focused on what I had to do. Mentally I was really good."

Petkovic won the last six games of the opening set but dropped serve to start the second.

The number 27 got it back in the fourth game and broke Errani in the final game to advance on a first match point.

The German was playing her first quarter-final at a major since 2011.

During that season, she was the only player to reach the last eight in three of the four slams.

But then a run of bad luck with injuries began.

"I'm very cautious with wins and with happy moments," she said.

"I'm trying just to stay with both feet on the ground and enjoy the moments when they come."

Kuznetsova, a double grand slam winner, was treated off court for a thigh adductor injury after losing the first set to Halep and returned with a strapping.

The Russian was unable to take control against the Romanian, who made a WTA breakout last season with five titles on four surfaces.

"It was a perfect day for me, I played really well, I did my game," said Halep.

"I was very aggressive. I played very fast.

"It was a good match, and I'm really happy that now I can play semi-finals in Paris."

Kuznetsova and Halep traded four breaks of serve in the final six games before the seed earned victory from a Kuznetsova forehand into the net.

Halep, the 2008 junior winner, held a previous Paris best of the second round in 2011. She has not dropped a set in the tournament so far.

Over the past 13 months, she has won seven titles, more than any player besides Serena Williams. A year ago, she was ranked 57th.
