PGA rookie Hughes leads way at Sea Island

Young Canadian Mackenzie Hughes leads the RSM Classic with Cameron Percy and Brett Drewitt the only Australian players to make the cut.

Canadian rookie Mackenzie Hughes has shot a five-under 67 on the Plantation course at Sea Island to build a two-shot lead going into the weekend at the RSM Classic.

Hughes got married during the only week he had off during the new season that began in October.

On another perfect day for scoring at Sea Island, Hughes hasn't dropped a shot over two rounds. He was at 14-under on 128.

Cameron Percy and Brett Drewitt were the only Australians to make the cut, both heading into the weekend at seven-under par on 135.

Percy carded four birdies and a bogey on his front nine and was never in danger of missing the cut despite a solitary birdie on the run home.

Drewitt dropped 13 places from after a promising opening round but secured a weekend start with a birdie on the par 3 17th hole.

Matt Jones, the 2016 Australian Open winner who skipped this year's championship in a bid to improve his chances of playing regularly on the US Tour, missed the cut despite finishing at three-under par on 139, alongside Stuart Appleby.

CT Pan, another PGA Tour rookie, shot a 64 on the Seaside course and was two behind Hughes.

Chad Campbell had a 65 at Seaside and was part of a large group three shots off the lead.

Scoring was so good the cut was at five-under par.

Among those also missing the cut were Matt Kuchar, Zach Johnson and tournament host Davis Love III.
