An unemotional Cy Walsh has sat through a brief court hearing with prosecutors saying they are still awaiting toxicology reports regarding his alleged murder of his father and AFL coach Phil Walsh.

The 26-year-old was lucid and calm when he appeared via a video link from a psychiatric facility in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Walsh has not entered a plea after being charged with the stabbing murder of his father at the family's home in suburban beachside Adelaide on July 3 this year.

Prosecutor Lucy Boord told the court toxicology reports were likely to take another six weeks to complete.

"There is some toxicology still outstanding ... the toxicology that is being done is on a hair sample," Boord said.

She said prosecutors were also waiting on a large amount of electronic evidence "that needs to be extracted and put in a format suitable for the court".

Witness statements were also still being prepared.

Walsh, wearing a dark green sweater and with his hair cut short, is being held at James Nash House, a secure psychiatric facility in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

His lawyer, Rebecca Gristwood, told the court Walsh wasn't being detained under a mental health order.

"We prefer he remain at James Nash House at this stage. I don't have medical evidence to provide to the court at this stage," she said.

After adjourning the case until November 3, Magistrate Elizabeth Shepherd asked Walsh if he had followed what happened at the five-minute hearing.

"Rebecca (Gristwood) has explained that to me, I understand," Walsh said.

The killing of Phil Walsh, a long-time AFL identity in his first year as head coach of the Adelaide Crows, stunned Australia.

Walsh played 122 AFL games at three clubs from 1983-1990 before embarking on a successful coaching career, initially as a fitness coach, then an assistant coach at two clubs before being appointed head coach by Adelaide.

The Crows will play an AFL semi-final on Friday night against Hawthorn.
