People affected by the Sydney hostage crisis can call Lifeline if they need support.

"It is understandable for people to react strongly after an event like this that has received extensive media coverage throughout the day and night," Lifeline chairman John Brogden said in a statement.

"If those feelings are overwhelming or if you don't know where to turn, remember Lifeline is here for anyone who wants to talk or chat online with us."

Lifeline is available all day every day on 131 114 or at lifeline.org.au.
