Collingwood will show how well they learned some harsh lessons in Sunday's AFL match against Richmond.
The Magpies are coming off an upset loss to Geelong, where the Cats bounced them with seven goals in the first 23 minutes of the match.
It stalled the momentum of a strong 4-1 start to the season.
Collingwood will start favourites again at the MCG against Richmond, who are in big trouble with a 2-4 record.
In all four losses, the Tigers have only managed six goals to three-quarter time.
But Magpies backline coach Ben Hart said the Geelong loss rammed home the importance of not dropping their guard.
"We understood how we thought Geelong were going to play and it almost looked like we didn't expect them to come as fast as they did," he said.
"Then we went away from what we normally do in those situations and we let Geelong transition the ball quite easily.
"Before you know it, it's in your back 50 and you're defending as hard as you can.
"After that, we were pretty happy with how we tidied up after half time ... but the damage had been done."
While the Tigers lost Ben Griffiths to concussion, they recalled Ty Vickery and promoted fellow key forward Liam McBean for his AFL debut.
McBean kicked five goals last week in the VFL.
"He plays very tall and he's a guy who flies for his marks," Hart said.
"He's been in pretty good form over the start of the year.
"He's reasonably athletic, from what we understand."
Despite Richmond's scoring woes, Hart said they have a dangerous attack that must be shown respect.
"They certainly have an interesting forward line," he said.
"If they're allowed to play how they like, they'll score heavily."
Sunday marks the 100th game for Nathan Brown, who has taken over from the Magpies' much-loved key defender Simon Prestigiacomo as the leader of their backline.
"It's a really good reward for him to get to 100, especially what he's been through with some injuries," Hart said.
"It's a credit to his resilience.
"He fights hard and he's forever learning.
"His leadership this year has gone to another level."
Collingwood regained Paul Seedsman from injury and also recalled first-year player Jordan De Gooey.
