Pies call in psychologist to cure the yips

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley reveals sports psychologist Daryl Marchant has been working with Travis Cloke and his teammates.

Collingwood have called in sports psychologist Daryl Marchant in an effort to rid the AFL club of the yips.

Key forward Travis Cloke was one of the Magpies' best in their crushing win over St Kilda last week, booting five goals.

However, Cloke missed a chance to kick a bag when he mucked up a couple of easy chances close to the posts.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley suggested Cloke had improved "markedly" in creating a more consistent approach to his goal-kicking.

"So we'll back the work that he's doing and that he'll continue with," Buckley said on Tuesday.

Buckley revealed Marchant, who worked with Geelong in the past and also Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd, has been helping Cloke and his teammates.

"He took him (Lloyd) from an okay kick to a fantastic set shot at goal," Buckley said of Marchant.

"Once a week he's attending training.

"It's a program we started about two weeks ago, adding to the goal-kicking program we've had in place.

"We're not standing still."

Buckley suggested routine was critical to getting it right when it came to set shots.

"Tony Lockett, Jason Dunstall, Peter Hudson - the best goal-kickers are very consistent, regardless of the circumstances they can't control," he said.

"Ten metres out straight in front or 50 metres out on an angle; 20,000 in the crowd or 80,000 in the crowd; beginning of the game or end of the game.

"There's so many different circumstances, no two set shots are the same."
