A community-led program has helped improve very low breast screening rates within the Indian and Sri Lankan-Australian communities.
The Pink Sari campaign was launched last year by the New South Wales Multicultural Health Communication Service in partnership with the Cancer Institute.
Research shows that Indian and Sri Lankan women aged 50 to 74 have one of the lowest rates of participation in mammogram programs in the state.
One of the key players in the Pink Sari project is the Director of the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute, Associate Professor Nirmala Pathmanathan.
She has told Michael Kenny, the project has helped to dispel some misconceptions around breast cancer screening in some migrant communities.
