Play to resume at sodden SCG

The sun has finally come out in Sydney and officials are confident play will start at 11.45am on day five of the third Test.

The sun is shining at the SCG, where day five of the third Test is due to start at 11.45am AEDT.

The umpires inspected the field at 11am and were satisfied with the condition of the outfield and state of the pitch.

Officials are hoping to squeeze in 79 overs on Thursday.

There hasn't been any play in the match since 1.42pm on day two.

Days three and four of the contest were abandoned without a ball being bowled because of heavy rain.

Day two was also ruined by the wet weather, with only 11.2 overs possible.

West Indies are 7-248 in the first innings of the match, meaning there is essentially no chance of a result baring three declarations.

It is the first time in 26 years that consecutive days of Test cricket have been lost in Australia because of rain.

Australia hold an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series, having retained the Frank Worrell trophy in Melbourne.

Cricket Australia have made admission free on Thursday, hoping to draw some sort of crowd to the dreary dead rubber.
