Players still in dark at Bulldogs: Mbye

Canterbury players admit information about the club's battle to get under next year's salary cap is yet to filter down to the players.

Canterbury players remain in the dark over their futures amid the club's 2018 salary cap issues, according to playmaker Moses Mbye.

The playmaker's name has been raised as one of several players being shipped around by the club, as they struggle to fit inside next year's likely salary cap.

The Bulldogs scored a mini victory on Thursday, with the clubs and NRL agreeing to offer a cap of $9.4 million to the Rugby League Players Association, up $200,000 from what had previously been mooted.

However that figure was still short of the $9.6 million Canterbury chairman Ray Dib had pushed for earlier this week, or the $10 million the club is believed to have worked towards earlier this season.

Dib was non-committal when questioned whether it would save his club from selling players off, however it is unlikely to ease all of the pressure.

"That's something (offloading players) we'll consider," Dib said.

Mbye conceded however that soon something would have to give at the Bulldogs.

"It looks like something's got to give," he said.

"We don't know what's playing out inside the club," he said.

"Until you get that conversation, you have that conversation with the coach, CEO or the hierarchy at the club or someone at the club, you don't know what's in it.

"If they do come to us, that means it's true."

The Bulldogs are one of several clubs believed to be struggling to get under next year's proposed cap, after some clubs had worked in advance towards a figure near $10 million before cap negotiations with the league hit a hurdle last summer.

Canberra and Penrith also had the majority of their 2018 roster locked in last year, with Panthers general manager Phil Gould arguing this week the lower figure was hurting clubs who had been prepared in advance.

The salary cap issue could be resolved as soon as Monday, when the players convene to consider the latest figure and collective bargaining agreement offer, which will be put to the RLPA on Friday.

Mbye has been involved in previous meetings for the RLPA with the NRL, and said it was important that the issue was resolved quickly.

"The sooner the deal can be done between the RLPA and the NRL, the better for all parties because it gives every club a figure we can work to," Mbye said.

"It let's some clubs know where they want to go in the future in regards to player contracts."
