Residents in Sydney's southwest say they heard a scuffle and shouts for help just moments before a bleeding man was found dying just 50 metres from a hospital.
Bankstown local Venero says he heard a "scuffle" outside his home about 11.45pm on Wednesday.
"I didn't expect a man to be murdered on my doorstep," he said.
A doctor who had just finished his shift at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital was walking to his car when he found the 29-year-old man lying on Claribel Street with serious head and leg injuries just after midnight.
"It's a shock, it's very surprising," Venero said.
The 29-year-old later died at Liverpool Hospital.
Another neighbour, who did not wished to be named, said she heard a man yelling out for help outside her home.
"There was someone running up and down," she said.
"He yelled out 'motherf***er' then 'help'.
"Someone also ran up here with a torch."
Another resident, Georgia Varoutsos, says her sister, who was sleeping, thought the shouts were a dream.
"My sister heard a man yelling 'somebody help' but she thought it was a dream," she said.
"Someone knocked on the door but when they went out they didn't see anyone."
A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the incident and has been questioned by police.
There are reports the 29-year-old victim may have been known to police.
"We are still establishing who we think it is," Detective Inspector Glen Fitzgerald, from Bankstown Police told AAP.
He said police are also investigating the possibility that someone dumped the man near the hospital.
The exact cause of death won't be known until a post-mortem is carried out, said Insp Fitzgerald.
The homicide squad is assisting Bankstown police with the investigation.
Insp Fitzgerald said police are still looking for other people who may have been involved in the incident.
