Plibersek to seek more women MPs

The ALP national conference is expected to debate how to select more women candidates in winnable seats to boost the number of female MPs.

Labor deputy leader Tanya Plibersek says setting a target of 50 per cent women MPs within a decade needs to be backed up with action.

Ms Plibersek is lobbying ALP national conference delegates to put some muscle behind the party's target of 50 per cent female representation.

She told an Emily's List gathering in Melbourne on Friday night, on the sidelines of the conference, that she had been involved in previous battles to get women preselected in 35 per cent of winnable seats in 1994 and raising the target to 40 per cent in 2002.

"Fifty per cent female representation is fantastic, but we also need a strong compliance mechanism. A target without a clear path on how to get there, doesn't cut it," she says.

Women's equality is expected to be debated later on Saturday, with a further debate on candidate preselection on Sunday.
