The former chief of staff to Victorian Premier Denis Napthine has been appointed to a plum role on a government board.
Anna Cronin, who took sick leave from the premier's office about six weeks ago, will become a commissioner on the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission (VCEC).
Treasurer Michael O'Brien says Ms Cronin is an economist and has other qualifications suited to fill a vacancy on the VCEC.
"My understanding is she resigned (from the premier's office) as of yesterday when her appointment to VCEC was completed," Mr O'Brien told reporters on Wednesday.
"People's personal medical issues are their own, but I have sought assurances and Ms Cronin has provided the assurance that she has had medical clearance to take up this role."
Steve Murphy, a former director of communications and strategy for former premier Jeff Kennett, was the premier's stand-in chief of staff during Ms Cronin's leave and has taken on the role permanently.
