Prime Minister Tony Abbott has joked that stress is slowing him down after crossing the finish line of Sydney's City to Surf fun run.

Mr Abbott managed to beat his goal of finishing the 14km run with his vision-impaired friend Nathan Johnstone in 80 minutes but joked the course record of 40.03 minutes, set by Steve Moneghetti in 1991, was safe.

"I think everyone's record is safe with me," he told reporters after arriving at the Bondi finish line.

The race was won by western Sydney athlete Brad Milosevic who beat 80,000 others in a time of 42 minutes and 15 seconds.
