PM needs to come clean on GST: Shorten

Bill Shorten has dismissed a new poll indicating increased support for raising the GST, saying it won't be popular once details are released.

Bill Shorten is standing by his campaign against an increase in the GST despite a new poll indicating growing support for a rise.

The latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll has found more than half its respondents supported an increase in the GST as long as the poor were compensated, income taxes cut and changes implemented to stop exploitation of superannuation tax breaks by the wealthy.

But Mr Shorten says "Mr Turnbull hasn't told the Australian people what he plans to do with the GST" and says he doesn't think a rise will be popular once details are released.
