PM open to Brisbane 2028 Olympic bid

A group of southeast Queensland mayors have pitched their 2028 Olympic bid to Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is open to the idea of Brisbane hosting the 2028 Olympic Games, the city's mayor says.

Ten southeast Queensland mayors met Mr Abbott, Deputy PM Warren Truss and Sports Minister Sussan Ley on Wednesday to discuss hosting the games across their region with Brisbane as the main host.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk told AAP the meeting in Canberra went well.

"All of them have said that they would be prepared to look at further information that we put on the table," he said.

"None of us were expecting any more than that today. Had they said they were not interested under any circumstances then it would have been game over."

He said it was now up to himself and the other mayors, in conjunction with the Australian Olympic committee, to put together a pre-feasibility proposal.

"We'll be back in Canberra next year and we'll have some detailed work done around pre-feasibility and then we can have a real conversation about what may be involved," he said.

The group of mayors also met other ministers and shadow ministers to discuss a range of topics, including infrastructure projects.
