PM pledges $20m for childhood cancers, Labor splashes cash in Queensland

The prime minister has announced a $20 million initiative aimed at combating childhood cancers while Bill Shorten has found even more cash for far north Queensland as Labor looks to win over voters in the Sunshine State.

Labor will redirect $1 billion of funding earmarked for northern Australia infrastructure to a specific fund for tourism facilities such as airports and convention centres.

Resources Minister Josh Frydenberg described the move as "pointless rebadging".

"It's just a money reshuffle," he told ABC radio on Tuesday, noting the fund already includes money for tourism infrastructure.

Mr Shorten is spending a second day campaigning in Cairns, in the marginal Leichhardt held by Liberal MP Warren Entsch since 2010.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is in Sydney, where he has pledged $20 million for combating childhood cancers.

The funding will help establish the Zero Childhood Cancer Initiative, providing personalised treatments for children with untreatable cancers.

Children diagnosed with cancer will have a tissue sample analysed to determine their genetics and the best treatment.

Meanwhile, a record three in 10 women have yet to decide which leader they prefer, an analysis of Newspolls taken over the past two months shows.

The analysis done for The Australian shows Mr Shorten has attracted a surge in support from men.
Both major parties are finalising their Senate teams, with Malarndirri McCarthy succeeding Nova Peris for the top position on Labor's Senate ticket in the Northern Territory.

The former NT government minister and Aboriginal woman from Borroloola was one of five candidates contesting preselection.

Senator Peris quit the Senate suddenly last week three years after then prime minister Julia Gillard made the Olympian and Aboriginal leader her "captain's pick".
In NSW, the Liberal Party's executive meets to decide the order of its Senate candidates amidst a bitter battle between incumbent Concetta and her former staffer Hollie Hughes.
