Prime Minister Tony Abbott has moved to assure welfare recipients that drug testing for the unemployed is not being planned by the federal government.

Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews told News Corp that the federal government had been examining the New Zealand model of reducing welfare payments for unemployed people who fail or refuse to take a drug test.

Mr Abbott said he had no plans to introduce the measure.

"Look, I saw a very highly speculaive piece in one of the newspapers today, it's not something that we're planning. It's as simple as that," he said.
