Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he's still trying to arrange another discussion with Indonesian President Joko Widodo about the doomed Bali Nine pair.

As Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran endure an agonising wait on Nusakambangan Island pending execution, Mr Joko is standing firm on the men's punishment for drug smuggling.

Mr Abbott said he last spoke to Mr Joko about a week ago.

"I am certainly wanting to have another conversation with the Indonesian president to build on the conversations that I've previously had with him," Mr Abbott told reporters in Perth.

"As yet it hasn't been possible to organise a further conversation but we won't stop trying because it is the constant duty of the Australian government to do whatever we reasonably can to protect our citizens."

Mr Abbott said Australia's dismay at the treatment of Chan and Sukumaran while being transported to the island had been conveyed to Indonesia's Ambassador to Australia Najib Riphat Kesoema.

He said the pair were treated in an "undignified ... at times almost macabre way" during the transfer.

"It's not in Indonesia's interest to execute these prisoners who have become an asset in its fight against drug crime," Mr Abbott said.
