The coalition plans to spend $50 million on fixing up dangerous roads in Sydney's south west.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the money will be spent on targeted works between Rosemeadow and Appin, improving safety for the 12,000 motorists who use the road to get into Campbelltown each day.
The Appin Road Safety Review showed there were 76 casualty crashes over the five years prior to 2012, including five fatalities, he says.
Mr Turnbull says it isn't just about safety.
"The upgrade will fast-track development of thousands of new homes, putting downward pressure on housing affordability for western Sydney families," he said in a statement.
It follows an announcement by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten on Wednesday that Labor would commit up to $50 million to upgrade Appin Road to a dual carriageway.
"Labor is committed to this investment because we know that local residents have waited long enough - an investment in the Appin Road is an investment in the future of Sydney's growth," he said in a statement.
The funding is targeted at the marginal seat of Macarthur, held by the Liberal's Russell Matheson.
