PM to visit remote indigenous community

North East Arnhem Land will host Prime Minister Tony Abbott for one week in September, as part of his election promise to engage with remote communities.

Tony Abbott will meet his election promise to spend a week in a remote indigenous community in the first year of his prime ministership - but only just.

Mr Abbott will visit North East Arnhem Land in September, exactly one year after taking over as prime minister.

It was his pre-election pledge to spend one week volunteering in a remote indigenous community every year.

Gumatj leader Gallarrwuy Yunupingu has offered to accommodate the prime minister, who will spend the week working with the Yothu Yindi Foundation and listening to concerns of community members.

Mr Abbott moved the indigenous affairs portfolio into his department after the election, stating a commitment to closing the gap and improving school attendance.
