Prime Minister Tony Abbott has urged insurers to treat NSW Central Coast storm victims fairly.

"Insurers love us when we are paying our premiums, but they don't always love us when we are making a claim," he told reporters in Gosford on Thursday.

Dungog in the nearby Upper Hunter region was hit by the worst storm in living memory in April, with 300mm of rain falling in 24 hours, causing severe damage including the loss of several homes.
