Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says she expects the prime minister to take "some action" if he can determine who leaked cabinet discussions over citizenship changes.

Tony Abbott has reminded his cabinet of the personal and political consequences of leaking to the media, after reports outlined in great detail a rift over a plan to strip Australian terror suspects of their citizenship.

"The prime minister hasn't spoken to me about the cabinet meeting, he knows I didn't leak the original story," Ms Bishop told ABC radio on Wednesday, adding the discussion should have been confidential.
