Papua New Guinea's Supreme Court has temporarily halted asylum seeker deportations back to their home countries.

The court granted the interim order on Tuesday night until a full hearing scheduled for Thursday.

Ben Lomai, the lawyer acting for 300 asylum seekers challenging their detention on constitutional grounds, says the order applies to asylum seekers who have been been granted a notice of their removal.
