Poisoned track cancels Vic horse race

Organisers of the Stawell Gold Cup race meeting are devastated after having to cancel it due to a poisoned track.

A popular Easter race meeting in regional Victoria will be abandoned because of a poisoned section of track.

One kilometre of the Stawell Race Track was deliberately poisoned in the week leading up to March 25.

Officials have been left with no choice but to abandon the Stawell Gold Cup meeting on Easter Sunday, which runs the day before the celebrated Stawell Gift sprint race.

Stawell Racing Club operations manager Penny Penfold said the organisers were devastated.

"It's by far our biggest race meeting for the year," she told AAP.

The race attracts 4000 people each year as part of the Stawell Easter Festival.

Police have declined to say how the track was poisoned, but believe it was a targeted attack.
