Polesitter Waters to break Supercars duck

Cam Waters has ended Supercars series leader Scott McLaughlin's streak of consecutive pole positions by taking top spot for Sunday's Sandown 500.

Cam Waters admits winning today's Sandown 500 would be a "dream come true" and the Prodrive Racing young gun might never have a better chance to do it.

Waters, and gun co-driver Richie Stanaway, will start on pole in the Melbourne endurance classic.

In doing so, the No.6 Falcon breaks Scott McLaughlin's seven-race qualifying streak.

Waters and Stanaway improved their ranking at every step in Saturday's gruelling three-stage qualifying.

Waters roared off the line in the full-time drivers race, jumping both McLaughlin and David Reynolds - who finished second and third - from the second row.

It is just his second pole in two full-time seasons in the sport, where he serves as Mark Winterbottom's understudy at Prodrive Racing.

And it has him dreaming of a first race win.

"It'd be absolutely amazing," he said.

"We all want to win each week and I haven't won in this category yet.

"So that's the plan ... , to win it.

"Everyone else is pretty quick at the moment so we've got some work to do.

"But I want to do some burnouts. It'd be awesome."

Waters re-signed with Prodrive last week, ensuring he'll stay in a Falcon until the end of 2019.

The 23-year-old said he didn't feel any pressure to deliver race wins for his team but wanted to do so all the same.

And on the evidence of Saturday's drive, he could be joined by Stanaway in the series sooner rather than later.

The Kiwi has been linked with a full-time drive for years, but has opted to spend time in the World Endurance Championship among other races.

Might the Tauranga native be suiting up in Supercars - joining compatriots Scott McLaughlin, Shane Van Gisbergen and Fabian Coulthard?

"I'd say it was a pretty good chance," he said.

"We're just waiting to see what materialises but I'm pretty confident of getting a seat next year. I can't really say much more than that."

Sunday's 500km race begins at 1:15pm AEST.
