Police brave Sydney fire to find no one

Two police officers who ran into a burning house in Sydney's south to check for occupants have been treated for smoke inhalation.

Two police officers who rushed into a burning house in Sydney's south after being told people were still inside have been treated for smoke inhalation in hospital.

Emergency services responded to the fire in Lugarno at about 10.15pm on Friday.

After police were told that people were still in the house, officers entered to search for them only to learn later that all five occupants had already evacuated.

Firefighters put out the fire but one room was destroyed.

Two police officers and two of the occupants, a 52-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, were taken to St George Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Fire & Rescue NSW have established that the fire was not suspicious and was caused by a faulty power board.
