Police believe a 20-year-old student has been kidnapped and may have been killed after he was last seen getting into a car in Sydney's southwest five days ago.

Jamie Gao, from Hurstville, was seen at about 1.40pm last Tuesday getting into a white car on Arab Road in Padstow.

Detectives have been told Mr Gao was seen speaking to two men, both described as being of Asian appearance, shortly before he got into the car.

Mr Gao's own car, a white Nissan Sylvia sedan, was found abandoned in Stuart Street, Padstow, later that afternoon.

Detective Superintendent Luke Moore said detectives harboured grave concerns for Mr Gao's welfare and it had been five days since anyone had heard from him.

"We believe he was kidnapped and that those responsible for his kidnapping may have killed him," he said in a statement.

"His family and friends are worried sick, and have told us that it is extremely out of character for Mr Gao not to have made contact with anyone for five days."

Det Supt Moore urged people with information on Mr Gao's disappearance to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Mr Gao is described as being of Asian appearance, approximately 170 to 175cm tall, of medium build, with black hair and brown eyes.
