A rare German gun, the kind made famous by fictional spy James Bond, has been uncovered in Sydney in what police say could be the first such seizure in Australia.

Detectives from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime squad found the Walther PPK pistol and ammunition after searching a home in west suburban Blacktown on Sunday.

A 24-year-old man was charged with possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm and ammunition without a licence.

The PPK pistols were widely used in the 1930s and 1940s by German police and military.

They were also the weapon of choice for James Bond in a number of films including Tomorrow Never Dies and Skyfall.

The fictional spy used this type of small pistol, which can be concealed easily inside a suit, as his sidearm in the films.

Police have told AAP it could be the first time this type of gun has been found in Australia.

"It's a (German) police-issued gun and it's not something you would see a lot of here," a spokesman said.

The man who allegedly had the gun in his house was refused bail and will appear before Blacktown Local Court on Monday.
